Scientific data
Our current way of life compromises the provision of an important nutrient for the absorption of calcium and consequently helping in the formation of bones and teeth, as well as helping our immune system, I am referring to Vitamin D.
If we go back thousands of years, we will observe that our ancestors had more exterior lifestyle habits than ours. Their livelihood was based on agriculture, farming and commerce, activities carried out mostly in open environments.
Our way of life has changed and we now spend most of the day indoors. Whether it's the working day that keeps us in offices during sunlight or the prevention of diseases caused by sun exposure, we have very little contact with the sun during the week.
Our organism evolved to transform the sun received by the skin into vitamin D, and thus contribute to maintaining health. The daily amount of vitamin D we need comes mostly from exposure to sunlight, around 90% of the daily requirement.
Closed inside offices and our homes, using clothes that cover most of the skin and using sunscreen, exposure to sunlight is compromised, and as a result, the daily need for vitamin D is not met.
Scientific studies link vitamin D deficiency with diseases such as osteoporosis and rickets, due to the importance of vitamin D in calcium absorption. Autoimmune diseases are also related to vitamin D deficiency, just as anyone who has suffered a disease that affects the immune system and does not have their vitamin needs met may have more difficulties in recovery.
In addition to working preventively in various diseases, studies report benefits of vitamin D supplementation such as preventing respiratory infections and gaining muscle strength in athletes.
