Scientific Data
For decades, thousands of sailors died of scurvy during long sea voyages. This disease is the peak stage of the problem caused by a deficiency of vitamin C in the body. Thanks to scientific and nutritional advances, it is now rare.
However, not reaching the critical stage of scurvy does not mean that daily vitamin C requirements are being met. A study conducted by USP and UNIFESP indicated that 80% of the population suffers from a deficiency of this vitamin.
Symptoms such as fatigue, low immunity and irritability can be signs of a lack of vitamin C. Due to its relationship with other processes in the body, hair loss can also be associated with a deficiency of this vitamin, as it helps in the formation of collagen, an essential component of the skin, hair, nails and joints.
Vitamin C plays a crucial role in iron absorption. Therefore, even with adequate iron intake, it may not be properly absorbed in the absence of sufficient levels of vitamin C.
